Another old track from Resinhead, notice the date on the picture of the flyer, this song was written for that show…

This was recorded at the same time as the previous track I posted and if I remember right, Bob from Sunnyvale actually wrote the lyrics when he was a member of the band.

Anyway, another blast from the past as I sort through transcripts getting ready to register for school….

That’s where I’m at.

I’ve decided to go back to school(again) for a new career, so I’ve been tied up trying to figure out where to go and how to go about doing it. This is also going to obviously slow down any progress with my music and may completely halt progress if I continue to work full time while in school.

I wish I had just finished it off the first…or second time….But I’d still be stuck here now trying to get out of the Information Technology field…

Yes, Genesis…

I got the Genesis 1976-1982 Box Set for my birthday and have been listening to it constantly since then. I do prefer the Peter Gabriel era more but the first few albums with Phil Collins on vocals are just as good as the earlier work.

The remixes of these albums are great, true to the to original for the most part with everything just being a little more clear in the mix. The mastering suffers from the modern day loudness wars, but it could have been worse. The surround mixes are not over the top and really just add more space to the music and avoids typical surround mix tricks. This is a great package if you are into the symphonic prog-rock of Genesis’s early days…I can’t wait for the Gabriel era box set to be released…

I think I’ve come to the realization that I’m taking on too much with this. Drums are definitely not my forte and it shows in the tracks I’ve tried to record. I know I can do it, it’s just that my goal is to create an entire album before the end of the year and I believe doing the drum tracks myself is going to take too long to accomplish this.

In the past I always used a drum machine or sequencer for my drum tracks or had an actual drummer. Programming drum tracks takes a lot of time to get them so they don’t sound like a machine, but once they are done they are always there and easy to edit. Working with a drummer is even faster and takes a lot of pressure off of me.

For now I think I’m going to be using programmed drums during my writing/demo phase and continue to work on getting my drum skills up to par in hopes that I’ll be able to do at least some of the tracks. I may also enlist the help of others to lay down some tracks. This goes against my entire DIY goal, but I think I’d rather have some help and get stuff done than do it all myself and still be working on songs this time next year….

With the eye injury and an accident that left slivers of glass all over the studio, I haven’t been real productive lately.

The eye is good, I feel fine and can see as well as I could before(which isn’t very well really), so that is over with. But last week I was rocking out on the drums and evidently got a little carried away and somehow knocked over the floor lamp I had sitting behind the drum kit. The glass portion on top of the lamp shattered and little tiny slivers of glass were thrown all over the place. I’m still finding glass in there, luckily none of it has ended up in my feet…yet anyway.

There are 3 tracks I’m working on and will probably not start any new ones until I get these 3 into a completed demo. I think the music is about 75% there on these tracks, but lyrics have not come to me for them. Like I said before, lyrics are going to be really difficult for me. What do I want to say, how do I want to say it….do I even have anything worthwhile to say? Does it really matter in the grand scheme of things? Some of my favorite songs I couldn’t tell you what they are about. Some of them I don’t even know the words to, so maybe I’m worrying about it too much….

I am getting used to the new version of Logic, but I’m afraid I’m going to have to start reading the manual to get fully up to speed. I hate reading technical manuals for something I don’t find technical. I feel that recording is more of an art than a science. Sure there are some technical aspects to it, but just because something looks good on paper doesn’t mean it’s going to sound good. Also, something that may be completely wrong in a technical sense, can sound wonderful. I tend to go by the motto that if it sounds good, it is good.

Some more history tracks will be up very soon, maybe even a video if I can figure out a good way to present it. And hopefully I’ll get back to what this site is supposed to be about, documenting the making of an album. Maybe I screwed up here, I’m not good at documentation, which is probably why my previous life as a software developer nearly drove me insane…
